This Volver lesson focuses on Almodóvar’s stylistic techniques, with a clear and engaging exploration of how meaning is created through camera work, colour and lighting.

Students are introduced to the main types of camera shots used in cinema, before analysing the shots that Almodóvar uses most prominently in Volver and discussing their effect on the viewer.

The lesson then moves on to colour symbolism, examining how emotions, relationships and character development are expressed through costume choices and settings.

Finally, students explore lighting, comparing natural and artificial lighting as well as darker, shadowed settings that help create mystery and tension in the film.

The resource is heavily supported by screenshots from the film, providing constant visual context and helping students link theory to real examples. It also includes a guided essay homework task, with clear structure, prompts and support to help students develop analytical responses with confidence.

This lesson works well as a standalone stylistic analysis session or as part of a wider unit on Volver or Almodóvar’s cinematic style.

The lesson includes:
- Power point with answers (43 slides)

- Printable booklet (17 pages)
- Homework task (guided essay)
